The work behind the title.
September 19, 2026 · GetLife Editorial
Leadership becomes visible in what people can rely on: a promise kept, a clearer path, a standard that survives a difficult day. A title may introduce someone. Their work tells the longer story.
What are you making? Who does it serve? What will still matter a year from now? Those questions belong to artists, neighborhood organizers, founders and people taking their first step.
Write down one promise you can keep this week. Make it specific enough that another person could tell whether you followed through. That is a useful place to begin.
Build a promise people can repeat.
A useful promise explains who your work helps and what they can expect. It is specific enough to guide a decision, and modest enough that your real work can support it.
Try this exercise: “We help ___ do ___ by ___.” Replace broad claims with one clear outcome you can actually deliver. Then ask a customer or collaborator to explain it back to you. Their answer shows what is clear and what still needs work.
The weekly follow-through.
Progress is easier to see when commitments have a place to live. Keep a short record of what you promised, who needs it and when you will check back. Update it before adding new promises.
At the end of the week, ask three questions: What shipped? What did we learn? What needs an honest conversation? This is an editorial practice prompt, not a promise of income or business results.
